Conventional doctors have long recognized obesity, cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and diabetes as major risk factors for a heart attack. Now a startling report shows a new risk factor that markedly affects the severity of coronary artery disease. As most of you know, heart attacks often manifest when the major coronary arteries become occluded with unstable atherosclerotic plaque.

In a newly published study, doctors measured that degree of coronary artery disease using angiographies and then carefully evaluated all of the known risk factors that could explain the blocked coronary arteries. The new study showed that blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and body mass index may not be the major predictors of degree of coronary artery blockage after all. Instead, the three independent risk factors that predicted the severity of coronary artery occlusion were age, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and free testosterone.

In this instance, "independent risk factors" means that if you did everything else recommended to protect your heart, you would still be at greater risk for serious coronary artery blockage if you had low testosterone and low HDL.

in this study, aged men with low free testosterone and low HDL showed more severe coronary blockage, leading doctors to conclude:

"These findings, together with the findings of previous studies from other laboratories,, raise the possibility that in men selected for coronary arteriography, age, HDL and free testosterone may be stronger predictors of degree of coronary artery disease than are blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and body mass index."

Estrogens are predominately female hormones and, in adults, are important for maintaining the health of bone, breasts, reproductive tissue, skin and brain. Imbalances in estrogen can cause a multitude of symptoms including weight gain, fluid retention, hot flashes and excessive bone loss. In women, excess estrogens relative to progesterone are indicated in a majority of breast cancers. In men excess estrogens relative to testosterone are thought to play a role in the development of prostate problems. Most scientists agree that byproducts of estrogen metabolism are a causative factor for both breast and prostate cancers.

Progesterone can be thought of as a hormonal balancer, particularly of the estrogens. Having intrinsic calming and diuretic properties, progesterone can enhance balance of all other steroid hormones.

Androgens play an important role in maintaining structural integrity of skin, bones, and muscles, and are necessary to generate energy for all dynamic processes in the body, from brain to muscle function.

DHEA is the principle adrenal androgen and is the main precursor for hormone production in post-menopausal women. Levels decline with age and, in some cases, supplementation with DHEA can restore energy, improve immune function and lift depression.

Testosterone is involved in the maintenance of lean body mass, bone density, sex drive and cardiovascular health in both sexes.

Women should be tested for testosterone levels with their yearly blood work. Ask Dr. Tankersley to give you a copy of our "Life Extension" blood panel to take with you to your doctor.

Chronic heart failure is a disabling condition characterized by exercise intolerance and shortness of breath. The disease arises from prolonged inflammatory cytokine activation that also causes severe muscle wasting. Testosterone can increase anabolic function, improve arterial dilation, augment cardiac output and is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties. Low testosterone is a common characteristic in men suffering from heart failure.

In a report published in 2004, 20 men with an average age of 62 took part in a random study where they received testosterone or placebo injections every 2 weeks for 12 weeks. Compared to the men who received placebo injections, the men who received testosterone injections were able to walk 3.5 times farther. The men who received testosterone also showed improved moods, which is very important because men with chronic heart failure have very high rates of depression.

The doctors also concluded that 12 weeks of testosterone treatment led to significant improvements in physical capacity and symptoms.

Two recent animal studies also show that testosterone has positive effects on the heart and arterial system. One study that was conducted on rabbits in 2003 showed that when testosterone was administered to the rabbits it helped to relax their coronary arteries, which suggests that humans suffering from angina could also benefit from testosterone supplementation.

Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy (NSSD) is an effective non-surgical treatment for back pain, neck pain, sciatica and radiculopathy caused by facet syndrome, bulging, herniated or degenerative discs. Even post-surgical patients have reported significant pain relief from NSSD treatments.

NSSD slowly lengthens and decompresses the spine, which created negative pressures within the vertebral discs. This reversal of pressure created an intradiscal vacuum that helps to reposition the bulging disc and can pull extruded disc material off of an impinged nerve root. Spinal experts believe that NSSD stimulates the body's repair mechanism, providing the building blocks needed to reset the pain fibers in the facet joints and allow pressure relief on the impinged nerve root.

What to expect at your first visit.

At your first visit, your doctor will conduct a physical exam and x-rays to make sure that you are a candidate for NSSD and to pinpoint the specific area of damage or discomfort. Your Doctor will then determine your course of therapy; a typical NSSD treatment program consists of about 20-25 sessions lasting 8-12 weeks. Some conditions require fewer visits and some require more.

At the beginning of each low back pain session, you will lie on the decompression table and be comfortably fitted with a pelvic harness that is designed to achieve optimal decompression of the lumbar spine. The table will be raised or lowered depending on your angle of pull and set for 50-70% of your total body weight. You will feel a slight pull on your pelvis as the table starts to slowly lengthen your spine and gradually decompress your discs to achieve negative pressure.

At the beginning of each cervical spine treatment, you will lie on the decompression table with your neck resting in a cushioned holster with a strap across your forehead to help hold you in place, you will then be set at 20-30 pounds of pull. You will feel a slight pull at the base of your skull as the table slowly starts to lengthen your spine and gradually decompress your discs to achieve negative pressure.

This treatment process is safe and relaxing. While some patients with extensively injured discs or low back pain have reported mild discomfort after the first few treatment sessions, their discomfort levels subside after subsequent visits. A shut of button is given to each patient at the beginning of the treatment session which allows you to stop the session at any given time if you feel any discomfort.

garden backpain

  • On any given day, 6.5 million people are in bed because of back pain.
  • Approximately 5.4 million Americans are disabled annually due to back pain.
  • Back pain is the second most common reason for hospitalization.
  • Up to 85% of the U.S. Population will have back pain at some point in their life.
  • After cold and flu, back pain is the number one cause of work absence.
  • Spine surgery is the second leading surgical procedure in America, with the total number in the U.S. approaching 500,000 per year.
  • An estimated 93 million workdays are lost each year due to back pain.

In a world where back pain is growing rapidly, people need to be educated on proper treatment. MD's will x-ray you and once they see there is no "broken" bones, send you home with pain medication and muscle relaxers. This treatment only covers up the symptoms and the underlying problems. Chiropractors look at an x-ray from a structural analysis. You need to know what is causing the problem and stop covering up the symptoms with a pill. Back pain in the United States will decrease when we realize that Chiropractors are the spinal experts!
